Linear is the default, clicky is the niche

Linear switches, smooth travel with no bump or click, account for 132 of 227 switches (58%), more than every other type combined. Tactile holds second place as the typing favorite. Clicky, the sound people still picture when they hear "mechanical keyboard", is down to 7%, and even the silent variants it once drowned out now outsell it in the catalog at 12% combined.

How far each brand leans linear

The aggregate hides real strategic differences. HMX is the most linear-committed major brand at 100% of its catalog, while Gazzew sits at the other end at 17%, keeping tactile and heritage designs in production. The big switch factories mostly lean linear because that is where the volume is: Gateron and Akko run linear-majority lineups. Kailh is the exception among the majors, splitting its catalog across linear, clicky, and tactile almost evenly, with clicky Box switches still a signature line.

Silent is the category to watch

Silent linears and tactiles, dampened inside the housing for shared spaces, now make up 28 of 227 switches (12%). That is no longer a curiosity: it is a larger slice than clicky, and it keeps growing as offices stay open-plan. If the next few years mirror the last, quiet is where switch R&D budgets go.

Methodology and citation

Every figure is computed live from the KeebScout switch database (227 switches from 40 brands as of August 2026; type is published for every entry). Specs are normalized to one schema and units, and unpublished fields are excluded rather than guessed, with the sample size noted wherever a spec is missing. Prices are the listed US retail price where available. Nothing here is weighted by sales, sponsorship, or affiliate payouts, because the database is not; the full method is on the about page. As the database grows, these numbers update on their own.
