The 75% layout won the middle

The 75% layout, which keeps the function row and arrows in a compact block, is the single most common shape at 127 boards (25%), ahead of TKL at 89 and 65% at 77. Full-size, the layout offices standardized on for decades, accounts for just 14%. Buyers have voted for boards that give the numpad's desk space back to the mouse.

New releases tilt even smaller

Looking only at the 103 boards released in 2024 or later, the compact tilt steepens. 75% alone takes 43% of recent releases versus its 25% all-time share, and 60% to 75% layouts together hold 63% of the new wave, up from 52% across the full catalog. Manufacturers are not hedging: the compact middle is where new keyboards go.

Start at 75% unless you have a reason not to. It is where the most models, the most price competition, and the fastest spec churn live, which is why our default recommendations concentrate there. Drop to 65% or 60% for desk space or travel, step up to TKL or full-size only if the navigation cluster or numpad earns its footprint every day.

Every figure is computed live from the KeebScout keyboard database (502 mechanical keyboards as of August 2026; 430 publish a release year). Specs are normalized to one schema and units, and unpublished fields are excluded rather than guessed, with the sample size noted wherever a spec is missing. Prices are the listed US retail price where available. Nothing here is weighted by sales, sponsorship, or affiliate payouts, because the database is not; the full method is on the about page.
